Where Are You From? A Simple Question with an Eternal Answer

I was browsing a member site recently, and as usual, people were introducing themselves, stating where they were from. I love reading those posts! Since I’ve lived in multiple places throughout my life, I’m always looking to make those connections. Those geographic connections start a conversation; perhaps they hint at shared experiences.

It's why, when people hear me speak, they often try to guess my origin. Some say Midwest; they may even hear a "southern-ness" through a certain word (I did live in Cincinnati, which is just across the river from Kentucky!). Others guess East Coast. All would actually be right!

Following the Prophetic Path

Lately, I've been reading the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew in my devotions, and it gave me a whole new perspective on the question "Where are you from?"

Matthew starts by tracing Jesus’s early movements: He was born in Bethlehem, then sent to Egypt for his protection. Next, the family moved back to Israel, to Judea, but not for long. His father, Joseph, concerned for their safety, finally settled them in Nazareth of Galilee.

The amazing realization is that each of these places referred back to the Old Testament, fulfilling a prophecy:

• Bethlehem: “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers or Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.” (Matthew 2:6)

• Egypt: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (Matthew 2:15)

• Nazareth: “...so was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: 'He will be called a Nazarene.'” (Matthew 2:23)

Jesus's origin story wasn't about a single town; it was about the fulfillment of a divine plan.

Did Jesus carry memories, experiences, even accents that showed he had certain traits from each of these places? Did he carry the demeanor of coming out of Bethlehem, the town of David? Or, did he sound like an Egyptian when he spoke?

Your Prophecy, My Prophecy

Years ago, when I really started to go deeper in my walk with the Lord, one of the first verses that drew me into a more in-depth study of the Bible was this: "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." (Philippians 3:20)

That verse birthed two questions in me: Am I eagerly waiting for heaven? And what does it mean to truly "eagerly wait"?

That search—reading the Word, spending deeper time with Jesus, learning of his love for me, and learning about my ultimate destination—led me to a realization today: I can say, "I’m from Heaven." No, trust me, I’m not an angel (just ask my family!). And, I haven't been there yet, but since I am a child of God and have received him as my Savior, that is my ultimate eternal destination—home.

When I am called home—whether through death or in life through the Second Coming of Christ—I have to ask myself, “What can I do today, tomorrow, this week, that will prepare me more, help me more eagerly await, or worship in a way that will bring me closer to understanding the culture of Heaven?”

There is a prophecy happening in my life as a believer in Christ.

Am I preparing for that fulfillment? Are you preparing for that? So, how do you prepare for your ultimate destination? Are you intentionally preparing? Or are you allowing life’s schedules, demands, and expectations to impede your best intentions?

I encourage you to meet with a faith coach or a spiritual director to discuss this or any other questions you may have about your spiritual journey.

The process of coaching is a lot like preparing for a prophecy. I always say coaching isn't therapy because:

• Therapy looks back and works on why you showed up here in this moment today as you are.

• Coaching looks at the horizon for where you are going (your prophecy) and works back a loosely held plan to get you there.

Are you ready to get your life plan focused? To see your destiny fulfilled and enter heaven in a glorious way?

As a Realtor, I love showing people homes, helping them find and buy the home that makes them feel at home. Many will say, “Wow, this feels just like home.” Let’s prepare for Heaven so when we enter we can breathe that sigh, “Wow, I’m finally home!”
